The day begins, and the usual routine is in motion at the home of Rav Chaim Kanievsky. People from all walks of life gather in a line outside the door of the small home, awaiting the moment they will have the audience of the world’s leading Torah scholar. Rav Chaim’s life has almost never been ‘normal’ - Since a young age he was recognized as a genius in Torah learning. The period between Rosh Hashana & Yom Kippur, however, is a time when we remember that there is no human on earth, no matter how respected, who is exempt from the mitzvot of the Days of Awe. How, then, does the most respected rabbi in the world prepare for Yom Kippur?

For the next ten days, Rav Chaim Kanievsky will prepare for the holiest day of the year by taking time to pray for all those who donate to a specific Vaad HaRabbanim fund. Day after day, the Rav hears stories of the deepest suffering and most unlivable poverty. These stories keep even the most esteemed rabbis in the world awake at night. And so a list of names is being compiled of those who donate to help the poor afford the essentials for the holidays.

In addition to the daily prayers between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, Rav Kanievsky will pray for the same list during Ne’ilah, when the gates of prayer are at their most open.

Another element has been added to the commitment as well, so that donors have a physical token of their agreement to join the Rav in his mission to help the poor. Custom-made coins were brought to the Kanievsky home and inscribed with the Rav’s written blessing for those who help.

This week is a time of self-development for Jews around the world. Those who donate can rest assured that they have made a positive difference in the world, and may even receive a physical reminder of their commitment.
