Look who I bumped into this evening buying onions! Rabbi Josef Mendelevich. As if he hadn't eaten enough onions and potatoes during his 11 years in Soviet Gulag prisons. His repeated 50-day hunger strikes helped bring down the Iron Curtain and free a million Jews. He could be a world-famous Rabbi, but he prefers to be a simple Jew in Jerusalem, eating onions and potatoes.
"Come to America with me, and we'll work to free the Jews!" I urged him.
"It was easier for us in Russia," he answered. "At least we knew we were in prison. The Jews in America think they are free.
